Student Funding

Over the past 5 years, all of the students in the Counseling Psychology Doctoral program have been funded through Graduate Teaching Fellowships (A.K.A. GTF's). Although the term "teaching" is embedded in the GTF title, these positions may include a variety of different activities, including teaching, research, counseling, or community/University service. Many of the GTF's in our own Department (Counseling and Human Services) are linked to the undergraduate program Family and Human Services. These GTF's involve supervision of undergraduate students who are working in practicum placements throughout the community as well as assisting in FHS courses. GTF's associated with this program also include work with other undergraduate classes, lecturing, and grading. In addition to these opportunities, many students work in GTF's across the University at the University Counseling and Testing Center, Disability Services, The Career Center, and Academic Advising. These positions are "strategic alliance" GTF positions with our program and are guaranteed to be available to Counseling Psychology Doctoral students. Opportunities also exist to obtain GTF's associated with research grants and funding. Many of these positions are available through the Child and Family Center.

In an era of decreasing resources in higher education you should know that while the program has been very successful in funding all of our students for every year of their training, past success is no guarantee of future success.  Nevertheless, you should know that the faculty consistently work very hard to develop relationships with other programs and agencies across campus to assure student GTF positions and in the short-term we see no immediate problems in being able to financially support our doctoral students in counseling psychology.

In addition to GTF's, many students receive scholarships and grants to work on their research or supplement their graduate school education. Many scholarships are available on campus and our students are very competitive and successful at obtaining these scholarships. Students have also been successful at obtaining APA minority fellowships which support their graduate education. Students apply for and are successful at obtaining a variety of Federal support for their research and education, including monies from NIH and the Department of Education.
