RESEARCH
SCHOLARSHIP
In
my research I focus on studying the factors that contribute
to risk and resilience, interventions for, and outcomes for
adolescents who are at risk for problem behavior, college
students and college student development, and the multidimensional
construct of connectedness as a critical protective factor
for both populations. I am also interested in ethnic
identity as a protective factor among youth and the development
of multicultural competencies among educational and human
service professionals. Among my publications in the area of
counseling and adolescence is the text, At Risk Youth: A Comprehensive
Response (4th Ed.; 2007, Brooks/Cole) by J. Jeffries McWhirter,
Benedict T. McWhirter, Ellen Hawley McWhirter, & Robert
J. McWhirter. For each of the past 12 years, I have visited
and worked in Peñalolén, Chile, a poor community
of Santiago, where, with my wife Dr. Ellen McWhirter, we have
conducted pro bono training workshops for couples on conflict
resolution, family communication, parenting, and group leadership
and facilitation skills. I was named a Fulbright Scholar to
Chile in 2004 to teach and conduct research. Through our University
of Oregon Child and Family Center, I currently coordinate
efforts among colleagues internationally to link my work in
Chile with work being conducted in the U.S., Peru, Quebec,
Italy, India, the Netherlands, and other countries, with the
goal of enhancing capacity for implementing empirically supported
youth and family interventions within other national milieus.

SERVICE
SCHOLARSHIP
Among my service
and governance activities (please see selected list of service
activities below), I am most honored to serve as the Faculty
Advisor for the College
of Education Ethnic Diversity Affairs Committee (EDAC).
EDAC is dedicated to recruitment, retention, support, and
advocacy for students, faculty, and staff of color within
the College of Education and to advancing student and faculty
multicultural sensitivity and competence through College curricula.
I have also consistently consulted with local schools on developing
programs and groups for assisting high-risk young people,
and I have served as a consultant for a school-based drug
and alcohol prevention program in Chile as well. Among my
other international service has been to consult with a program
of formation for Catholic priests for the Congregation of
Holy Cross in Chile. I have also helped to develop and serve
as consultant and trainer for the Centro de la Familia
(Center for the Family) in Peñalolen, Santiago, Chile,
where my spouse, Ellen Hawley McWhirter, and I conduct workshops
for families and couples on improving family communication,
mediation, parenting, and on group leadership and group facilitation.
Ellen and I have visited and have conducted pro bono professional
work in Chile each year since 1996. With Ellen and with other
members of my family (with whom I have also co-authored) I
have conducted similar workshops and training for couples,
families, and schools in the United States as well (see list
of Selected Training Workshops below).
